Allergic contact dermatitis is a rash caused by a sensitivity to something coming into contact with the skin. Common culprits include metals, latex, dyes, fragrances and cosmetic preservatives. Patients can develop an allergy to something that they have been using for many years. Patch testing is a unique way of testing patients with rashes to determine if they are allergic to something in their environment. At our office we offer an extended patch test series of 85 allergens. The testing is pain free is can be a great help in controlling chronic rashes.
At our office we believe that each patient has different needs that should be addressed in his or her daily facial regimen. At your next visit we would be happy to review your regimen and ensure you are on appropriate products to target acne, aging skin, uneven tone, pore size, pigmentation and sun damage.
Sun exposure increases the amount of UVA and UVB that is absorbed by the skin. High levels of sun exposure age the skin, causing sun spots and giving the skin a thin wrinkled texture. UV exposure also increases the risk of skin cancer. We advise that everyone incorporate regular use of sunscreen , hats and sunprotective clothing. Also it is important to have regular skin checks by a dermatologist to ensure that we catch skin cancers and abnormal moles early.
The treatment for acne is based on the type of acne that a patient has. People with inflammatory acne often need medications that decrease inflammation and kill bacteria. People with black heads and clogged pores benefit from retinol based topical creams and acne facials.
It is best to use a combination approach when dealing with wrinkles and aging skin. Botox or Dysport can be injected to soften wrinkles in dynamic areas of the face such as the forehead and the crow\'s feet. Dermal fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Sculptra, Evolence, and Radiesse can be used to fill in deep lines and re-contour the face. Cosmetic creams and laser treatments can address textural issues of the aging face.

Many people with rosacea experience flairs with spicy foods, alcohol ingestion, caffeine, and stress. Melasma is a condition of hyperpimentation that is very common in South Florida. It often affects the face and sometimes the neck. It is most common in women but can rarely occur in men. It often occurs during pregnancy or while a patient is on birth control pills. There is no cure, but with treatment your skin can achieve beautiful even texture and pigmentation. Treatments include bleaching creams, creams to enhance exfoliation and chemical peels. The hyperpigmentation can return and worsen with sun exposure; therefore the most important part of treating melasma is the daily use of high SPF sunscreen, even when the skin is totally clear.
Options for treating unwanted hair are twofold. At our office we have three lasers for hair reduction and can treat patients of every skin type. Usually multiple treatments (6 to 8) are required for permanent hair reduction. Fine blonde hairs cannot be removed with a laser, but there are some topical treatments that we can recommend.
